An Overview
The PMP Examination Content Outline (ECO) is the official, essential document from PMI that serves as the blueprint for the PMP certification exam. It defines the specific, updated knowledge areas and tasks—divided into People, Process, and Business Environment domains—that project managers must master, rather than just the PMBOK Guide.
The PMP® Exam Content Outline (ECO) is the most important document for the PMP exam that nobody knows about. This is because all questions for the PMP exam must be developed based on the tasks described within the ECO and not the PMBOK® Guide. Therefore, not understanding the ECO, means that you are essentially flying blind into your PMP exam.
We have prepared the comparison between ECO 2021 (the earlier version) and ECO 2026 (the new version) starting from April 2026.
Table
| Sr . No | ECO 2021 | ECO 2026 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Distribution of Questions, between Predictive and Agile& Hybrid | About half (50%) of the examination will represent predictive project management approaches and the other half (50%) will represent agile or hybrid approaches (Ref- ECO 2021-page 2) | Now Approximate 40 % questions on Predictive and 60 % on Agile/Hybrid (Ref – ECO2026 page-5) |
| 2. | Domain wise Distribution of Questions | i. People --------------------- 42% ii. Process --------------------- 50% iii. Business Environment -- 8% Total --------------------------- 100% | I. People -------------------33% ii. Process ------------------41% iii.BusinessEnvironment 26 % Total --------------------------100% |
| 3. | Domain wise Total Tasks Comparison | i. People --------------------- 14 ii. Process --------------------- 17 iii. Business Environment -- 4 Total ----------------------------- 35 i. People --------------------- 14 ii. Process --------------------- 17 iii. Business Environment -- 4 Total ----------------------------- 35 | I. People ------------------ 8 ii. Process --------------- 10 iii. Business Environment - 8 Total ------------------------- 26 |
Notes
1. From point no. 1 in the above table, we observe that from the exam point of view, importance of Predictive projects is reduced and that of Agile & Hybrid Projects is increased.
2. Looking at Total tasks (35 vs 26), one may apparently feel, that total work content of PMP® Exam is reduced. Work content, however, is NOT REDUCED, because the enablers (bullets) in many tasks are increased. This means the tasks have reduced but you need to do more work for each task (as compared to the earlier version).
3. Looking at Domain wise Distribution of Questions, one may apparently feel, that the importance of Business Environment is increased and that of People Domain is reduced. This is also NOT CORRECT because many topics from other domains are shifted to Business Environment. Ex. Define and establish project governance, Plan and manage project compliance, remove impediments and manage issues, Plan and manage risk have been covered under Business Environment.
Summary
The ECO 2026 , i.e., in the new version is distributed differently and essentially you are covering the same content as in ECO 2021.
Prothoughts will provide all the MOCK exams and study material to reflect the new ECO version 2026.
We wish you all the best for your PMP Certification!
