Fruitful result to my hardwork – PMP Journey

Hello All,

I am Santosh Pavan Kaushik Jayanthy, working as an associate in AECOM India Pvt Ltd with a total experience of 11 years in the field of water and wastewater consultancy. My career path has started diverging into a Project Manager along with being a Technical Manager due to the competitive world we are in. And I welcomed it with both arms. Then I decided that I need something extra like a catalyst to give a slingshot to my career. That’s when my friend suggested to me of PMP certification. I attended the training classes in May 2019 under the renowned instructor for the Ahmedabad region Mr. Saurav Parikh. That training really helped me to get warmed up as to what PMP is like.

To all the aspiring people who want to get certified, I would like to give you details & a table which I followed religiously.

  1. I followed 3 books totally. Headfirst PMP by O’Reilly, PMBOK 6th Edition and Rita.
  2. I wrote notes of whatever I studied each day. Trust my writing takes time but it helps you imprint stuff in your mind. I have a total of 3 written notebooks for PMP.
  3. Read religiously for 3 hours a day including one hour in writing the notes. One hour in the morning (5 Am) and one in the evening (9 pm to 10:30 pm)
  4. A must and should tip. You must read PMBOK 6th edition for sure. No ifs and buts.
  5. I started on 01-06-2019 and my scheduled date of the exam was 21-09-2019.

Below is the table of how my schedule looked like.

June:

  • One full reading of Headfirst PMP by O’Reilly along with notes (15 days)
  • First mock attempted on 16-06-2019: 59%
  • I went through each question either right or wrong. Understood all the basics.
  • Next 15 days read the same headfirst and given the second mock on 30-06-2019: 61%

July:

  • July 1st, 2019, I have started reading PMBOK on a very detailed basis. Each and every line and by making notes out of it.
  • 3rd mock test on 15-07-2019: 65%
  • Even though my mock test was late, I used to solve sample questions all the time.
  • I was very dissatisfied with the third mock. However, I understood what went wrong. I was memorizing all the stuff. I started reading PMBOK by correlating the content with my actual project on day to day basis.
  • I started observing my seniors on how they were going about project management.
  • This is where I could connect the dots.
  • I got confidence after getting 85% and above in three consecutive mock tests which helped me cleared the exam. However, the exam was not at all like the mock test. They are like real case scenarios and no direct questions for me in the exam.
  • The exam day was crazy, and I was so nervous before and all through the exam. The pass result after the short survey gave me goosebumps.
  • I request you all to prepare a plan as per your time and commitment. Please make sure you have an exam date in mind before you start the preparation which is very important.

August:

  • I continued reading PMBOK.
  • My 4th mock test was on 07-08-2019: 74%
  • This is where I thought that I must sharpen my skills and keep reading continuously.
  • I started attempting to mock every other week.
  • 5th Mock 15-08-2019: 76%

September:

  • I stuck to PMBOK and the more I attempted mock, the more I understood that reading PMBOK was more and more important rather than Headfirst by O’Reilly or Rita.
  • 6th Mock 21-08-2019: 81%
  • 7th Mock 31-08-2019: 84%
  • 8th Mock 07-09-2019: 85%
  • 9th Mock 14-09-2019: 88%
  • The last 2 weeks before the exam, I was ready crazy like everywhere and anywhere. I am pretty much sure, I revised 4 times of PMBOK

I got confidence after getting 85% and above in three consecutive mock tests which helped me cleared the exam. However, the exam was not at all like the mock test. They are like real case scenarios and no direct questions for me in the exam.

The exam day was crazy, and I was so nervous before and all through the exam. The pass result after the short survey gave me goosebumps.

I request you all to prepare a plan as per your time and commitment. Please make sure you have an exam date in mind before you start the preparation which is very important.
