How a PMP certification shall enhance your career!!!

It’s the time for appraisals soon (Dec-end for a few and March-end for many). You put your best foot forward so as you glorify your achievements for the year to prove your exemplary performance through your assessment of KPA/KPI. This time also sees a flurry of activity for the appraise to shine in the appraisals by bagging certifications. And one of the most prestigious certifications that all strive for to score marks in your appraisals happens to be the PMP certification! An eye catcher on pmi.org is also a published survey extolling the % hike in salaries post the certification at http://www.pmi.org/-/media/pmi/documents/public/pdf/learning/project-management-salary-survey.pdf?la=en

The immense benefits of the certification and PMI membership include:

  • Networking opportunities – membership in PMI opens opportunities wherein through your local PMI chapter and membership projectmanagement.com you get to meet like minded project professionals and heavyweights
  • Global job board
  • Availability of PMI publications and global project management standards
  • Access to standardized tools, templates, articles and guides to keep oneself informed and help increase efficiency on the project
  • Enjoy & educate yourself via webinars, articles, blogs and papers

Do shy away from an unpopular belief shared by misguided peers who parrot around saying that there is no advantage gained in terms of salary rise / promotions even after the certification. They are most likely the ones who have not been able to maximise mileage from membership. An important mindset that one needs to have here is “DO NOT ASK WHAT YOUR ORGANIZATION CAN DO FOR YOU… BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION”.

Keeping this in mind, place yourself in the shoes of your organization. Having PMI membership and certification is of no worth if it’s just going to be a mention on your business card or under your email signature. Utilising the above listed benefits from PMI to help increase the efficiency of your organization, bring clientele through networking and help in the growth of the organization through learnings shall increase returns to its stakeholders, This shall help in creating an impactful year end assessment in enlisting successes against your KPA / KPI thereby benefiting you and the organization as a whole. So look at the PMP certification and certification as a means rather than an end!
