How to Pass the PgMP Exam on the First Attempt

pgmp exam

PgMP exam is one of the sought after exams, for Project and Program professionals. Why? Because PgMP is one of the elite certifications in the Project Management space and it carries a certain aura and recognition.

The other reason is that the PgMP exam is known to be very tough. I have different views, though, on this. The exam feels tough because many exam-takers do not understand the gist and concepts of PgMP and they feel the questions and situations are very confusing.

I strongly feel that the PgMP exam is relatively easier than the PMP for multiple reasons:

  1. The PgMP syllabus is far lesser than PMP – the PgMP guide is 173 pages against the PMP of 600 plus 300 pages of Agile
  2. There are very few PgMP takers and obviously PMI wants to increase the % of PgMP certified professionals.
  3. PgMP is simpler to understand and again, it relates to lesser scope of PgMP.

However, many find the PgMP exam tough for many reasons:

  1. Aspirants do not understand the situation as they were never in a similar PgMP situation.
  2. The relatability quotient to PgMP is far lower than say a PMP or project management
  3. There are very few people who are currently practicing PgMP in a manner which is followed in the Standard guide of Program Management
  4. People do not understand the concepts of PgMP as they are not easily understood from the guide.
  5. Many trainings or self-paced do not simplify the essence of Program Management and it becomes difficult for aspirants to understand Program Management or related scenarios.

Let’s try to understand how to attempt the PgMP exam questions, i.e., the golden rules for attempting the questions in the PgMP exam:

Golden Rules for attempting the PgMP exam questions

I have compiled some golden rules for attempting the PgMP exam:

  1. Assume that you are the Program Manager for a Large Multinational organization
  2. This organization has many regions and many projects running. The Program which you are managing has a decent Executive Governance board and multiple projects for the program.
  3. Besides the above, there is no other assumption you should have while attempting the question. Whatever written in the question is sufficient to answer the question. Nothing further should be assumed.

Some tips and tricks to attempt the exam questions:

  1. Follow the Process of Elimination. Spot the wrong answers and reduce the probability from 50% to 25%. It is easier to spot the wrong answer than the right answer. You can knock out 2 wrong answer choices from the list of 4 choices and put yourself in a position to choose from 2 choices – i.e., 50% probability.
  2. Spot the keyword in question. This requires certain practice and ProThoughts is providing more than 1200 PgMP questions for you to practice, which I feel is more than sufficient.
  3. Reading Comprehension – Understand what the examiner is trying to ask in the question. Many go wrong here as well – they understand the concepts, but perhaps not the English. Improve the Reading Comprehension if that is the weak area.
  4. Select the best answer – Select the best answers from the lot. Sometimes all the 4 choices are correct choices – you need to select the better of the 4. Again, practice will make this part easier.
  5. Prepare well through ProThoughts Mock exams and practice questions. You need a Prepared Mind – this helps to maintain calmness and exude positive energy during the exam. This will help.

As PgMP is not practiced enough in day-to-day workplaces, you need an extra rigor to practice well for the exam.

The Rigor at ProThoughts

I feel that the PgMP training is extremely essential because the subject is not practiced in the workplace and many students (almost 95%) do not know Program Management. And the Standard guide of Program Management do not elucidate the concepts and that’s where I and ProThoughts add considerable value.

Your rigor comes post the training to apply yourself and carry the momentum post the training. And practice in the Exam Pattern we recommend. We have received feedback and we have fine tuned our exam strategy periodically.

I advocate a certain rigor to prepare and practice the PgMP mock exams on ProThoughts ProMOCK simulator. For instance, we strongly recommend analyzing your questions which went wrong and you need to refer to the notes to correct the understanding. Furthermore, there is direct access to the PgMP trainer who can be available for a call to help with a specific query.

We strongly recommend practicing hard and giving the mock exams in a particular order. We are not only developing the concept understanding but also preparing the student for a 4 hour exam. This rigor helps and many of our students have mentioned this specific point. We even give a week wise plan to study.

PgMP Exam Question Types and Patterns

The PgMP Exam typically has situational questions to test your application of knowledge. For example, the questions which have been recently asked in 2025 or so, is which project you would prioritize given a situation of limited funds. To answer this, you need to understand which CSF is being prioritized and which project is against which CSF.

To make the question more difficult, I have seen the obvious answer of which CSF to choose for your project, is not all there in the 4 choices. In this case, you are expected to choose the next best course of action and that should be the answer choice.

Another question may be to identify the Benefits and Outcome from a corporate strategy situation, using the Benefit Map. It will look Greek and Latin, if you are oblivious to PgMP concepts. But if you have attended ProThoughts PgMP training, you should get it 100%.

A sample question with 4 answer choices is given below. Check if you can answer:

Program A has been cancelled. Program B relies on benefits achieved from two of the projects within Program A. Management is transferring those two projects into Program B so they can be completed. The two projects are 50% and 70% complete respectively. The projects use a different set of reporting methods, standards and tools from Program A.

What is the best first step to incorporating the two projects into Program B?

1. Review the project status with the two project managers, evaluate the component initiation criteria from Program A, evaluate impacts on funding/resources to their program, and prepare a change request to incorporated into Program B.

2. Meet with the project teams to understand the status of both projects. Develop a charter and hold a chartering session to discuss the overall status of the Program B and where the two projects fit. Also discuss Program B policies and procedures, structure and implementation methods, and overall benefits.

3. Convene the Program Steering Committee to discuss the two projects and to brief them on status, methods for incorporation of the projects, and impacts and benefits from the transition into the program.

4. Meet with their executive sponsor to get input on how best to incorporate the two projects into Program B.

The correct answer is A

Let’s rule out the wrong answer choices to begin with.

The Executive Sponsor is not a sole decision maker – Governance Board is. So, we can eliminate Choice D.

Choice B – The focus of this answer choice is on Program B and not on the projects to be incorporated. I want the reverse from the question. You want the 2 projects to get into the Program B. You wish to evaluate the 2 projects and that should be the focus.

Choice C – A good choice but I will do it post Choice A.

Choice A exactly summarizes what you need to do to get the projects in Program B. And it is the best answer from the above choices.

Passing PgMP exam in the 1st attempt

If you do ProThoughts training, follow our rules and practice the rigor, you will hit the sweet spot of clearing the PgMP exam in 45 days.

I do not think passing the PgMP exam is tough; it is a myth that PgMP exams are tough. I find it relatively easier than PMP.

The PgMP application support is a little tedious especially the 3 essays. However, ProThoughts supports you in reviewing and making your essays and your application, ready for approval.

We have achieved a good success rate with our PgMP exam. Many have cleared it in the 1st attempt.

I am referring to some success stories and videos of the students who have cleared the PgMP exam.

I am also adding the customer success story of a candidate who did it in his 2nd attempt:

Summary

The PgMP exam is relatively easier than PMP, provided that you understand PgMP concepts and that you can visualize it on its application value. I clearly demonstrate and make students understand PgMP concepts in very easy terms during the PgMP Training Course.  At the end of our training, PgMP is clearly understood and with confidence. The idea is to carry on the momentum and practice with rigor. ProThoughts provides enough mock exams and individual practice questions. And with practice, passing the exam in the 1st attempt is really not difficult for an average professional.

You can reach out to me on my linkedin profile and I will be happy to answer your queries.
