My Journey of Becoming a Certified Project Manager by Tarun Mandal

     5196 views

I am Tarun Mandal, working as a Project Manager currently and also having work experience across various verticals in Banking Domain for the last 16+ years. I have handled projects throughout the lifecycle of the projects ranging from medium to high complexity using Agile, Waterfall and Hybrid Methodologies.

My Journey of Becoming a Certified Project Manager:

During the initial days of working in Projects, though I was handling the projects, I was not quite efficient in delivering the way a Project should be delivered, nor did I comprehend or was able to articulate enough with the terminologies. Due to this, my confidence and expertise was taking a back seat and I was not given a role of leading a project. I was not aware of critical terms such as Scope, Risk, Budget, Constraints, managing stakeholders, communication management and other important terms such as a Project charter which is the first document. I took some time to retrospect and analyze the gaps which were a hindrance to my performance. I then realized it’s time to get certified as Project Manager.

My Stint With ProThoughts:

I was very keen to do certification from a Certified Partner who could be a part of my journey to achieve my goal. I reached out to various training centers and after a little research I joined ProThoughts in June 2020. I attended the weekend sessions by my Coach Mr. Saurabh Parikh and he was instrumental in guiding me through the path of becoming a certified project manager. He is an amazing trainer and his sessions made me realize the value of getting certified and was highly motivated, encouraged throughout the sessions. During one of the sessions, I remember he encouraged us by displaying his PMP Certificate and challenging all of us to have ourselves to get certified someday. This gave me a boost to get certified at the earliest and then the real challenge began.

I started my preparation by reading Rita Mulchay book and PMBOK, also by practicing sample questions and dedicating 2 to 3 hours daily. I also referred to the ProThoughts materials which provide me great help in understanding the concepts. After practicing a couple of sample questions I was able to achieve a 70% average and hence I took the decision of giving the PMP exam. I finally filled in the application and gave the PMP exam and was certified.

My take is the journey was not easy but with a lot of hard work and efforts I was able to make it through. I highly recommend joining ProThoughts if anyone wants to clear the most valued exam PMP. Thank you to the entire team and Mr. Parikh for being a part of my journey.

Wishing you good luck for the exam. If I can Pass, so can you!!
