The PgMP Exam Content Outline (ECO) provides a clear and structured outline for what you will learn in the PgMP course and how the PgMP Certification exam evaluates your program-management skills. Designed and recently revised by PMI, the PgMP ECO is the foundation for PgMP Certification training, including both classroom and PgMP online training formats.

The latest revisions in the PgMP ECO were done by PMI to ensure that the PgMP curriculum accommodates current strategic program management practices used by global organizations. This revised structure includes 5 domains, 72 tasks, and 126 knowledge and skills, making the PgMP certification training a comprehensive and industry-aligned preparation path for success.

Domain 1: Strategic Program Management (11 Tasks)

The aim of the first domain is to identify opportunities and benefits that achieve the organization’s strategic objectives through program implementation. This domain comprises 19 Knowledge Pointers, with 15 being exclusive to this domain. Domain 1 sheds light on business strategy, economic forecasting, and portfolio management, as well as analysis of requirements, scenarios, and trends.

Domain 2: Program Life Cycle (35 Tasks)

The second domain includes 26 knowledge pointers that discuss benchmarking, logistics management, procurement management, program management plans, quality control, SWOT analysis, etc. This domain is divided further into 5 sub-domains representing the program lifecycle.  The subdomains are as follows:

• Initiating (6 Tasks): Defining the program and constituent projects, and obtaining agreement from stakeholders.
• Planning (9 Tasks): Defining program scope and developing the program, including all constituent projects, and all activities that occur within the program.
• Executing (9 Tasks): Performing work necessary to achieve the program’s objectives and deliver the program’s benefits.
• Controlling (6 Tasks): Monitoring progress, updating program plans as required, managing change and risk.
• Closing (5 Tasks): Finalizing all program activities, including all constituent projects, executing transition plans, archiving, obtaining approvals, and reporting.

Domain 3: Benefits Management (8 Tasks)

The third domain involves defining, creating, maximizing, and sustaining the benefits provided by programs. It includes 6 knowledge pointers such as benefit optimization, business value measurement, decision tree analysis, maintenance and sustainment of program benefits, performance and quality metrics, and program transition strategies.

Domain 4: Stakeholder Management (7 Tasks)

This domain focuses on capturing stakeholder needs and expectations, gaining and maintaining stakeholder support, and mitigating/channeling opposition. It contains 5 knowledge points exclusively covering customer relationship management, satisfaction measurement, and expectation management.

Domain 5: Governance (11 Tasks)

The final domain works on establishing processes and procedures for maintaining a proactive program management oversight and decision-making support for applicable policies and practices throughout the entire program life cycle. It consists of 13 knowledge points that help you learn the Go/no-go decision criteria as well as governance models, processes, and procedures.

To get PgMP-certified, you must follow the following steps:

1. Check your eligibility. You can use our PgMP Eligibility Calculator for an accurate response.
2. Enroll in our 2-day Program Management Professional (PgMP) certification training online instructor-led session.
3. After this, you can fill out the PgMP application.
4. After the Application submission, pay the PgMP Exam Fee. The exam fee is USD 800 for PMI members and USD 1000 for non-members. In India, it is ₹48720 for PMI members and ₹60900 for non-members.
5. If your application is selected for an audit, you will be asked to submit supporting documentation such as copies of your degree and Signatures from your supervisor for the projects and/or programs you recorded in the experience verification section of your application.
6. Undergo Panel Review. A panel of volunteer PgMP-certified program managers will assess your professional experience based on your Program Management Experience Summaries on the PgMP application.
7. Once you pass the Panel review, you can take the PMI PgMP exam. PgMP is a center-based test that is conducted online. In some cases, you can opt for the paper-based test as well. The details for the same are provided in the PgMP Handbook.
8. Upon completion of the center-based examination, you will receive a printed copy of your test results. You can also access your exam report on the online certification system within 10 business days after your examination date. For paper-based tests, the results are revealed within a period of 6-8 weeks on the online portal.
9. If you pass the exam, congratulations! You are now a certified Program Management Professional! This PgMP certification is valid for 3 years, and you can renew it upon expiry by earning 60 PDUs.

The Program Management Professional (PgMP) exam is a center-based test (CBT). There will be 170 multiple-choice questions in the exam. Out of which, there are 20 pre-test questions. These pretest questions are not scored. Furthermore, the total duration of the exam is 270 Minutes, which includes an initial tutorial and a post-exam survey.

Here is the time distribution of the PgMP Exam:

• Tutorial: 15 Minutes.
• Exam Duration: 4 Hours (240 Minutes).
• Post-exam Survey: 15 Minutes.
• Total Time: 270 Minutes.

The 4-hour examination period does not include the time needed to finish the tutorial and survey. Also, there are no scheduled breaks during the PgMP exam. You can take a break during the exam, but the timer will not pause during this time. Each question is marked at 1 Point, and the total points you earn establish your result. The number of questions you answer correctly places you within one of the performance rating categories you see on your result report.
