Memoirs of the road towards PMP® Certification!

Preparation for PMP certification brought back memories of my college days.

I have about 18+yrs of Work Experience in the IT industry and was managing the off-shore development center of a Canadian based company. While managing the project development life cycle there were projects which would overrun the forecasted timelines and cost budgets. This made me realize that there could be gaps in our current processes that needed to be looked at.

I decided to look at doing some formal training in Project Management along with a couple of colleagues from my organization. We did some research on a good institute in Mumbai or Pune and finally based on reviews and discussion with Siddhant from ProThoughts decided to pursue our training with ProThoughts. I am glad I had registered with ProThoughts and would recommend ProThoughts to any future PMP aspirants

A Big thank you to the ProThoughts Team and a special shout-out to Mr. Ashish Sadekar whose knowledge and real-life examples helped clear most of the difficult Project Management concepts.

My earlier thought of spending 9 hrs for 4 days attending training gave me nightmares and I wasn’t sure I would be able to pay attention.

The interactive game based training was wonderfully planned into the training to ensure that we were focused most of the time.

I joined the July 2017 batch but due to some family medical reasons wasn’t able to attend the full course of the July batch. I had to take the class I missed in the following month (August batch) which I think was a blessing in disguise.

After the July batch I had set my horizon to take the exams in November before Diwali but due to work pressure wasn’t able to find the time to open the books.

Attending the training for the day I missed in the month of August helped me catch up some of the lost ground and I was determined to give my exams before Christmas.

Trying to manage work with study wasn’t easy. We had a WhatsApp group of batchmates who were a motivated bunch and would regularly post in PMP questions. A few of them passed the examination in the month of September / October and this helped motivate me to start my preparation.

The preparation was slow to start with and my first read of the Rita Mulcahy took well into November to complete. Some of it left me confused with thoughts of whether I would be able to continue with this.

Post that I did the exercises in the book and additionally downloaded a couple of PMP exams apps on my phone which I would try out during my train journey from work to home and back. Most of my answers turned out to be wrong and this further made me rethink. I decided to wake up early in the mornings and spend a couple of hrs in the morning reminded me of my college days during exams

The next 2 readings of the Rita book started to help clarify and I was able to join the dots across the different knowledge areas. By early December I was ready to give my first Mock test designed from ProThoughts.

In between December to Jan took the other 3 Mock Test and did breeze through the Rita books. Suddenly the Rita book didn’t look so difficult as it did during the first reading. The mock test helped me identify the areas I needed to focus on, prepare ourselves for sitting for a 4 hrs test

The ProThoughts team was always supportive and helpful during my study and the process of Registration with PMI.

I finally registered for the Certification exam in the Month of January 2018. Went for the exam with an open mind. In all my mock test I wasn’t able to complete the exam within 4 hrs but thankfully all the practice helped and I was able to complete the PMI exam within the time limit with some time to review.

The wait before the result made me very anxious and final screen “You have passed” made all the hours spent in preparing for the exams, sacrifices done and early morning studies worth it.
